The Software
Computers are directed by a series of instructions called computer programs that specify the sequence of operations the computer will perform. These programs must be loaded into the main memory. Computer programs are usually referred to as computer software. Software acts as a connection between the user and the hardware.
Be careful when choosing your software because some packages only run on Macintosh computers and others only on PCs. An economically sound idea would be to have an integrated package that offers several applications at the same time. Many computers will include pre-loaded software for on-line services which will provide you access to the Internet.
Computer software can be categorized into two different groups:
System Software: This refers to the programs that are related to controlling the actual operations of the computer equipment. System software does not perform specific tasks for the user. Part of the system software is the operating system. An operating system (OS) is a set of programs that gives the computer the instructions necessary to operate, telling it how to interact with the hardware, other software and the user. Before an OS can be used it must be loaded into the computer's memory. This is the booting (G) process. Today, many computers use an operating environment (G) that works with the operating system to make it easier to use. They are accompanied by a graphical user interface (GUI) that uses visual clues such as symbols or icons to help the user. Apple Macintosh computers have a GUI built into the operating system. Microsoft Windows is a GUI for DOS (disk operating system) (G) which is the most commonly used operating system on personal computers.
Application Software: This refers to the programs that tell the hardware how to perform specific tasks. Application software is written for a specific OS. Your computer has to have enough memory to run the software that you require. Personal computer users use application software packages such as word processing, desktop publishing, electronic spreadsheet, graphics software, database management systems, data communications, and electronic mail. The computers used in the WwW project are Apple Macintosh and the software applications you will need to go unto the internet, write letters, send emails etc are preloaded into your iBook.
AppleWorks
Appleworks is an integrated software package that allows you write letters, create presentations, design a database, do artwork and design a spreadsheet. Have a look at the "Log unto AppleWorks video" for information on finding the application package and logging unto it. We will be using the word processing package on Appleworks.
