PCEA Church, Kenya

P.C.E.A. Kiambaa Church

Location: About 25 Kilometres from the city of Nairobi. The PCEA is located in Muguga Parish, within the Muguga Presbytery.

The church has a number of facilities in the Lankia Centre open to the community. In the centre we have a dispensary, a kindergarten, a library, a hall and computer college. The centre is managed by the Lankia Board, which oversees the development of the services through three dedicated committees.

The Kindergarten. The Kindergarten admits children from 3 ½ years. In 2006 we provided this service for 62 children. We charge 350 Kenya shillings a month  (£2.50). The children are fed breakfast and lunch. Although the fees are deliberately kept low, most parents are not able to pay the fees therefore we look for donors to help us out. Children leave the kindergarten at the age of 6.

The Education and Computer College.

There is free primary education in Kenya from age 6 to 14 years; however,  High School education is not free. Due to poverty, not many students are able to afford high school and most drop out of school. The board comes in and looks for young people who have performed very well at school but lack funds for school fees. The board, in conjunction with the Elders from the church offers a few scholarships to students in need. After the students finish high school they are ready to go to either University or colleges. Some students chose to go to our computer college. The computer college charges 3800 Kenyan shillings per course, which runs for 6 months. The cost of the course is kept deliberately low, although our running costs are much higher. We are therefore also looking for donors.

Dispensary. Five members of staff work here (2 nurses, a lab technician and a pharmacist and a cleaner). The dispensary has lab facilities. Patients pay a very small fee and come from far and wide for health services. We offer prenatal education to expecting mothers but unfortunately, we are not yet able to offer maternity services at the dispensary because our current facilities cannot handle emergency situations. For example, it is a requirement that we should have an ambulance.  We can refer patients to the P.C.E. A Kikuyu Hospital. We are currently looking for donors to purchase an ambulance.

Information for donors.
